In the year 2000, the prestigious Grand hotel Karel V was opened in the historical centre of Utrecht. A complete renovation of the building of the former Teutonic Order was the beginning of this remarkable journey.

This building stems from the 14th century and was formerly known as the Duitse Huis (German House). Emperor Charles V stayed in this building in 1546 with his sister Mary of Hungary when he attended the Chapter Meeting of the Order of the Golden Fleece. Since then, various famous historical figures have been a guest in this hotel and some of the rooms in the hotel still carry their names.

The hotel consists of different parts, including the Napoleontic wing, the Garden Wing and the farm building. The new Roman wing, with its 30 new hotel rooms combines an air of Roman history with 100% elegance and luxury. Besides the addition of the hotel rooms, the hotel has invested in an upgrade of the existing rooms and in new facilities. The heart of this Roman wing is formed by a beautiful wellness centre with a sauna, steambath and swimming pool with a jetstream, as well as a seperate room with fitness equipment.

Grand Hotel Karel V has thirteen conference and meeting rooms. All rooms have been restored in keeping with the original historic ambience and charm, which makes them perfectly suitable for business purposes and parties. The Graaf van Leicester Auditorium is equipped with the most modern facilities. The Unico van Wassenaer Zaal has its own particular style and ambience. In this room, for example, a beautiful oak wood arch construction has been restored in its former glory.

The new Executive rooms are situated in the Roman wing and the Superior rooms can be found in the Napoleontic Wing. Due to the historical character of the building, all the rooms are decorated differently and have a distinctive atmosphere. Grand Hotel Karel V can cater for all your needs, and arrange everything for you in accordance with your wishes right down to the last detail. You can choose one of the 13 beautifully refurbished conference halls, including an auditorium for 100 guests, and all audiovisual equipment you possibly need. The conference halls can be hired for a morning, an afternoon, or longer, with the added option of complementary services including various break formulas, lunch, dinner, or buffets.

Napoleontic Wing

The Napoleontic Wing, with 39 Superior rooms and 5 Empire suites, where you can experience the century-old historic atmosphere, combined with the comfort and facilities that are so characteristic of modern times.

All our rooms have the following standard features:
Free Internet, a safe, air conditioning, a trouser press, an en-suite bathroom with toilet, shower and / or bath, a blow-dryer, bathrobe, toiletries, slippers, pay TV, regular television, telephone, radio, coffee and tea facilities, a mini-bar, an alarm service/alarm clock, an umbrella and a work desk.

Superior rooms (30 – 42 m2)

Are you looking for a truly classic, soothing environment? Your Superior Room is located in our monumental Napoleonic Wing. Enjoying a beautiful view of our Officer’s Garden or beautiful court garden, you are sure to relax to your heart’s content. Our Superior Rooms have a classic interior with cherry-wood furniture, an elegant wooden floor and a classic four-poster bed. The Superior Rooms on the Hotel’s top floors boast an original carved wooden ceiling.

Thanks to their size, these rooms allow for the placement of an extra bed. This means that it is also possible for three people to stay in these spacious rooms and enjoy their regal atmosphere.

Empire suites (38.50 – 51 m2)

A spacious suite, with a classic interior that is full of character. This suite distinguishes itself from the other luxury rooms with its separate sitting area in a cosy bay window and its king-size bed. An ideal option when you plan to stay with us for a number of days. Relax in the sitting area and enjoy the splendid view of our garden. This romantic suite is also perfect for a wedding night or a lovely weekend away.

Thanks to its size, this suite allows for the placement of an extra bed. This means that it is also possible for three people to stay in this spacious suite and enjoy its imperial atmosphere.

Roman Wing

The Roman Wing lends it name from the heart of the wing: a beautiful and relaxing wellness centre. And the discovery made by archaeologists from Utrecht on this spot: a Roman burial site (40-70 AD), which is the likely burial site for those who built the Utrecht castellum.

The 30 new rooms of Grand Hotel Karel V are best described as a combination of a touch of Roman history with 100% contemporary style and luxury. A number of remnants from Utrecht during Roman times are on display in the hotel for guests and other visitors to admire, including a number of archaeological finds.

Executive rooms (26 – 29 m2)

Deluxe rooms (29 – 37 m2)

Do you really enjoy a fine view? In that case, the Deluxe Room may be just the thing for you. Here you can look out over our lovely court garden or take in a unique view of Utrecht’s mediaeval Dom Tower. The room’s attractive setting will ensure that you can fully settle down. Several of these spacious Deluxe Rooms feature a unique second floor with a desk area and an extra flat-screen television.

Executive suites (52.50 – 64 m2)

An extensively furnished and comfortable suite with a contemporary atmosphere. The suite features a separate sitting area, a work area with a desk and a conference table. Ideal for a stay of several days and exceptionally suited for use as a temporary office or a small meeting room.

Indulge in refined culinary dishes and delicious wines in Grand Restaurant Karel V. Enjoy an delicious lunch in the former kitchen of the old monastery in Brasserie Goeie Louisa. Aperitifs, lunches, and dinners are also served on the spacious Brasserie terrace, or the breathtaking Garden Terrace slightly further along the way, weather-permitting. Aperitifs are served in our mediaeval cellar bar Caves Caroli if the weather is poor. Karel V, where there is a variety of culinary options to choose from. Indulge in culinary refinement and delicious wines. In a stylish room full of special details like large mirrors and a magnificent mantelpiece below the imperial coat of arms, the two-headed eagle. . Maître and Sommelier Johan Kragtwijk welcomes and takes care of the guests, from aperitifs to after-drinks. Chef de Cuisine Jeroen Robberegt and his brigade prepare every meal at the highest level. Bar Cellars Caves Caroli

An aperitif, a good glass of wine, a cocktail, draught beer, a snack. Our hotel bar is located in the first 2 of the 3 authentic mediaeval tunnel vaults: Caves Caroli. A stylish start to your evening: dinner in the Restaurant or Brasserie, or a night out on the town.
